As little as a decade ago, wireless headsets could cost quite a bit of money but only deliver relatively poor sound quality and audio pickup range compared to what today’s models are capable of. In fact, the cost could make your head spin because it was so astronomical.

Today, there are a ton of such wireless headsets out there that cost relatively little money and can deliver more than acceptable sound quality for that bit of money. If true sound quality is important, it is certainly the case that more expensive headsets will deliver commensurately higher and more consistent sound quality over a wide spectrum of music or other audio output.

There are a couple of different methods that wireless headsets use to receive audio output. Normally, the better headsets are based off of radio frequency systems. In these, a transmitter from the audio output unit, whether it’s a television or stereo, sends radio waves which are picked up by the wireless headset receiver.

As far as pros and cons go, radio frequency wireless headsets have one con; they sometimes are noted for really burning through standard alkaline batteries pretty quickly. Because of this, it might be a good idea to spend a few bucks for a set of nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries rather than constantly having to replace standard batteries. It’s not really a big deal, but some people don’t relish stocking up on batteries.

In one type of wireless headsets, infrared is used to beam a signal from the audio output unit to the wireless headsets. If there’s a downside to this system, it’s that infrared depends upon line of sight. In other words, if a person wearing these headsets steps out of the path of the beam running from the audio output to the headset the signal is quickly lost.

Really, it’s more a matter of preference than anything else. RF wireless headsets can be just a little bulkier and a bit heavier than IR headsets. But the difference is almost unnoticeable. If it comes down to a matter of cost, with radio frequency headsets being just a bit more expensive than infrared headsets. Also, as was said before, pricier headsets generally deliver better sound quality.

As usual, the Internet can be a great source of information when it comes to something like wireless headsets. There are any number of brands and models out there and much of the fun in learning about them is doing all that window shopping online for them. So take a few minutes to learn the difference between really good units and which ones are really poor.
